There are more endearing terms you know, baby and honey would be plain in comparison.

"Honey" and "baby" do not bother me as much as "little red head" and "wild man" in Dark Desire. Those terms of endearment really "set my teeth on edge".

If you think on it though, many couples these days are calling each other honey and baby...I wouldn't mind it... Darius can call me anything he wants
I agree w/ u there suzanna... those little "other" endearments set my teeth on edge as well... I'd be slapping the idiot who'd call me something so barbaric as "my woman" and "little red hair" grrr... he could atleast call my by my name!!! Midnight "In an age of nothing, at a time when we stand at the brink of our own destruction- strengthen your belief in yourself, in the future of humanity, in the things of this world which cannot easily be percieved, awaken that which lies dormant within your soul. Re-ignite the flame of your consciousness, and measure the strength of your conviction. Reveal the lie. Renounce your hatred, seek, find, and embrace the truths you are fortunate enough to discover. Cherish them. Use them to anchor you in the sea of chaos that is the world we live in. When twilight draws near, when you are pushed to the very limits of your soul, when it seems all that you have left are the dead remnants of the fabric of your life-believe."

The annoying nicknames I hear nowadays that drives me nuts are things like "Sugar buns" (i've heard that one)
"woman" "Yo!" and "sweet cheeks." My boyfriend has always called me "baby doll", "lovely" "dear" "dearest" and "twit" and I cherish each one b/c I"m the only one he calls any of these names, except his pet kitty (but that's ok b/c his family is a bunch of cat worshippers) It absolutely drives my friends and family crazy that I let him call me twit....LOL, that's what happens when you're friends for five years befor dating though, I guess. |

Re: endearments | ||

The problem I have is not with the words themselves, but the jarring note they sound in the sentences where everything else is precise and formal. Darius speaks very correct, Old World English, yet suddenly throws out a modern term of affection? It doesn't go. If he was truly modern speaking, he would use 'can't' instead of cannot--but he doesn't. He would no more use 'honey' than I would call a man 'old man Smith' or whatever--because that is not the way I talk about people. (I just hope the Gestapo believed me on that point--because it is true. My accuser would say that--not me. Unless I'm singing along with the old song 'Old Man River'--which I haven't done in decades.)
Ok, so maybe 'honey' does set my teeth on edge(really, Suzanna!!) because it is the term my sister, the evil Christine, uses to address me whenever we're around people she wants to impress with our filial bond. Like she doesn't really hate my guts when we're alone. Yeah right. So I see the term as fake anyway--and Darius certainly is not faking his feelings for Tempest. So use something else before I thump you, baby Dark boy!!! |

I'm afraid that I have to agree with you. If they are truly trying to keep up with modern times, I believe they would start more with the english usage i.e. contractions, rather than with endearments. I have to admit that Lucien calling Jaxx honey was a little easier to take than all those "babys" flying around in Dark Fire. Just my take on it, no arrows please.

Re: endearments | ||

If I am not mistaken, in Desire Jacques called Shea 'little red hair', not 'little red head'. But either way, it bothers me not at all, perhaps because with my Native American lineage, this kind of name is well understood. Indians(forget being PC) often had several names in their lifetimes, based on physical characteristics like this, or on deeds they performed later in life. Chief Sitting Bull, after all, was not called that as a baby. The 'chief' part, at least, was earned as an adult. 'Little Red Hair' is a name that might very well have been given to a female captive of diminutive stature with red hair. Of course, in that case, it was not an endearment, but simply a name.
For reference on this, read INDIAN CAPTIVE by Lois Lenski. Yes, I know it is a children's book, but it is based on fact--the captivity of Mary Jemison. It remains one of my favorite books. Even though I am much, much too old to be a child. |

the "little red hair" would not disturb me...I am 5'3" and red headed!
...I am from the south where...sugar, (but said like sugah), honey, darling,baby, or baby girl, baby boy are terms of endearment...I have a friend who calls me "doll"...my beloved father called me that ..nobody else eccept my father called me that term...my husband calls me "sweetie" or "honey".....no those terms do not surprise me...the Carpathian male seems to be very affectionate and lovening beneath that haughty Alpha Male immage... ...

As a writer of fan fic I know it's hard to next to impossible to try and write something that's going to conjure the same images for everyone. You know the deal when you have a car wreck and 4 witnesses, you're gonna have 4 different stories. So, maybe CF goofed but she wrote what she thought was best at the time. First I'll have to agree with Banshee...
I really wouldn't mind if a carpathian called me honey or baby.. Really, if he just called me I wouldn't care at all...! Since I am Danish, I don't speak English every day. I watch movies and read books in English though and I naturally associate this kind of endearments with different things because I've seen movies where they are used.. I really don't like "Honey" it is so... I dunno.. They sound so normal? "Baby" is kind of cute though.. And I like "Angel" too. Who said that anyway? Lucian? I don't know if I like all the foreign ones... I guess Americans think it is kind of exotic? I just think it is too much... It's annoying when I'm reading in English and certain words are foreign... //PI |

Re: Endearments | ||

The main point of this issue is that these men are hundreds of years old, and if they were 'trying on' common vernacular, surely it would be in ALL their speech, not just a pet name for their woman? To speak without contractions, other slang, or modern idioms but then suddenly haul out 'baby' like a disco flashback is jarring. It doesn't sound right--just as it is NOT something I would ever say to refer to someone as 'the old man' in a professional setting. That, at least, helped me insist that lie, was, in fact untrue.
Being a daughter of the south, honey is especially annoying because it is--along with 'sweetie' -- shorthand for 'I know I've met you before but I can't be bothered to remember your name.' Used especially by sorority and society ladies to those they feel are not 'part of the club'. Now I know not everyone sees these terms in the same way, but that is what fed my annoyance. As a result, Dark Fire remains my least favorite Dark book. I cannot imagine Mikhail EVER saying 'honey' or 'baby', except perhaps to Savannah as a child, when she really WAS a baby. |

Re: Endearments | ||

In California usually if someone says "Honey" to you it's taken as that person is speaking to you in a condescending manner. When I use the word "Babe" not "Baby" it's a term of affection to your boyfriend, husband or a very good friend of the opposite sex. I'll use the term "Baby" when speaking to my 8 year old son.
I think Darius and his forced isolation from interacting with humans left him in the stone age when it came to endearments. The terms are cute but ancient like the Carpathians. Sometimes you work with what you got. Darius probably heard a human use the terms of endearment and he picked it up. Poor man had such a adjustment dealing with Tempest since no one ever questioned his orders. Poor man! |

Re: Endearments | ||

I just finished Dark Fire and I too didn't care too much for the "honeys" and "babys". It's not that I associate negative things with these words. I actually think they're sweet endearments. But they seem out of character for Darius. And I believe there's just too much of them used
Just my 2 cents. ![]() |

Re: Endearments | ||

Well, I just got back from a weekend with my sister, who would follow up talking to me like I was a dog she didn't like with a 'honey, what do you think?' I'm gritting my teeth just typing that, it gets me so MAD. So naturally when I saw Garius and Julian using it, it just made me see red. Surely men that old have more imagination?? They've been all over the world and all they can come up with is condescending terms for women? (Can you ever imagine a MAN being called 'baby' or 'honey' by another man? )
But hey, at least it wasn't 'sweetie'. That one REALLY gets me going. |
